Cloth Diaper

A cloth diaper is a washable, reusable diaper. They are made of 1 or more types of fabric which may include cotton, hemp, fleece, and bamboo along with several others. Depending on the type of fabric you choose, some cloth diapers require the additional use of a diaper cover.

Diaper Cover

Diaper covers come in many styles and shapes, but their function is to provide a waterproof outer layer for non-waterproof diapers. Diaper covers are usually made from polyester, waterproof nylon, polyurethane laminates (PUL), fleece or wool.

Fitted

Fitted diapers closely resemble disposable diapers. They are contoured in shape and fitted with elastic around the legs and back. They fasten with aplix or snaps, and a waterproof cover must be worn over them.

Aplix

Aplix is a hook and loop fastener commonly used on cloth diapers.

Hook & Loop

These are Velcro-like closures.

Pocket Diaper

Pocket diapers are like AIOs orAI2s. They have an outer layer of a waterproof material and an inner layer of a stay dry material, like micro fleece or suede cloth. They close with aplix or snaps. They have a pocket opening that allows for the inserts and doublers to be stuffed in the pocket during use and then removed for laundering. Pocket diapers are a popular choice among cloth diapering parents because you can customize the diapers absorbancy levels to fit the needs of your baby. (Boy or girl, light or heavy wetter, day or overnight protection etc.)

Insert or Soaker

Inserts, much like Doublers, are absorbent, multi-layered pad-like absorbent material. However, Inserts are typically purchased and used to stuff inside a Pocket Diaper. Made from absorbent materials such as cotton, hemp, fleece and microfiber, Inserts can be used in combination with a Doubler for babies and toddlers with heavier wetting patterns or for overnight protection.

Doubler

A Doubler is a pad-like absorbent material that can be added to a diaper to increase absorbency when extra protection is needed, perhaps at night time. (They are placed between the diaper and your baby’s skin.)

One Size Diaper (OS) Pocket Diaper

A one size diaper usually fits a child from birth up until they are potty trained. (Approximately 8- 35 pounds) This sizing is typically achieved by a row of snaps on the front of the diaper. This allows for the diaper to be folded over to create a smaller size. As the baby grows, several snap settings allow for waist and leg growth. The waist band is most often fastened with a snap, or an aplix closure.

All In One Diaper (AIOs)

An AIO is a cloth diaper that has a waterproof cover and an absorbent inner liner all in one piece. These diapers commonly fasten with aplix or snap fasteners.  AIOs are frequently used by parents who need a convenient diaper for a day care, for quick and easy changes on the go, and by parents who just want the convenience of a one-piece diaper along with the ecological, economical, and health advantages of cloth.

All In Two Diaper (AI2s)

AI2's are very similar to AIOs with the exception that the absorbent material is not attached to the diaper in any way. The absorbent material is usually a separate piece that must be used in conjunction with the diaper. The drying time for these diapers is shorter than the traditional AIO.

Liner

Liners are thin layers of cloth or paper that are placed between the diaper and your baby’s skin. They are used to aid in the cleaning of solid waste and when diaper creams are being used. In the case of paper liners, the solid waste collected on the liner can be removed from the soiled diaper and either thrown away or flushed. Cloth liners must be washed, but aid in laundering. They also help protect the actual diaper from staining and prevent build up on the diapers when using diaper rash creams.
